They all pleaded not guilty before Senior Resident Magistrate Vincent Adet and were granted surety bond of Sh20, 000 or cash bail of Sh5, 000 each.

However, they were all remanded after failing to raise the Sh5, 000 cash bail each.

Drama started when time came for the prisoners to be taken to Kitale prison. Mr Simiyu untied his shoe laces and joined them together in a knot. He then tied one end on a grill inside the court cell and the other on his neck.

His weight however was too heavy for the laces and he landed on the floor with a painful thud while choking.

His fellow prisoners immediately burst into laughter as prison warders moved in.

“Though he was unconscious after being chocked we managed to rush him to the hospital where he was attended,” said Trans Nzoia West Police boss Jackson Mwenga,.

“That was a stupid thing for him to do since he will face another charge for trying to kill himself,” he added.

The case will be mentioned on October 11
