Riots erupt over land dispute


A land ownership dispute in Githurai 45 area turned violent on Thursday morning with rioters engaging the police in running battles for over two hours.

A private developer, a church and squatters claim ownership of the 214-acre Zimmerman settlement scheme located opposite Clay Works.

Police were acting on a court order obtained by the private developer ordering the eviction of the squatters.

The eviction turned violent with the rioting squatters momentarily paralysing transport along Thika superhighway.

“We have a court order that directs us to stop any activities on the land by the group of people calling themselves squatters,” said Kasarani OCPD Augustine Nthumbi.

The police contingent included reinforcements from Kilimani, Langata, Buruburu, Kasarani was Embakasi divisions.
