Riots in Yaya as City askaris close illegal car washes

Traffic was disrupted on Thursday morning along Lavington/Yaya Ring Road after cash wash operators in the area resisted efforts by Nairobi County officials to evict them.

The rowdy vendors are said to have barricaded the busy road and lit bonfires which has made the road impassable. More than 10 illegal structures have been closed during the exercise.

Police at the scene have advised motorists to use an alternative route as they find a solution.

This comes just a day after Nairobi County formed a sub-committee whose task will be to restore order, sanity and enforcement of the law in the city.

The sub-committee, led by Deputy Governor, Mr Jonathan Mueke, has already deployed more than 700 enforcement officers to ensure all illegal structures in the city are brought down.
