Reported suicide least in Nairobi out of major cities

Nairobi has emerged the city with the least cases of reported suicide in a new ranking of major cities with youthful populations.

However, of the 25 world’s major regional cities surveyed, the Kenyan capital was ranked at the bottom in both education and digital access.

The Canadian city of Toronto is the world’s best city, according to the ranking released on Monday.

Nairobi is among the least appealing for the youth, ranked number 24, beating only the Congolese city of Kinshasa.

The urban youth survey 2014 prepared by Edelman, an American public relations company, shows that Berlin is the second-best world’s city, followed by New York, Dallas, Paris, Chicago, London, Los Angeles, Tokyo and Seoul at the top 10.

While it did not make it to the top ten, Nairobi was among five top Africa’s largest cities, including Cairo, Lagos, Johannesburg and Kinshasa.

Young people

The ranking was concentrated in selected issues affecting young people living in the world’s major cities.

Mexico city was voted the best in access to education for the youth, but is at the bottom in economic evaluation.

Financial access for youths in Lagos is among the least, but the West African city scored fourth overall in entrepreneurship.

Kinshasa ranked poorly in eight out of 16 categories, while Johannesburg finished sixth overall in diversity.
