Rapist returns from jail to ask for victim’s hand in marriage

A 17-year-old girl in Voi is living in fear after a man who defiled her three years ago was set free and sought her hand in marriage.

The orphan, who lives with a female guardian, said a toilet block that had been recently constructed in her guardian’s home was part of her dowry.

Sasa juzi juzi akaanza kusema eti niolewe na yeye, alikuwa anataka mimi…alikuwa ananiuza ili choo kijengwe maanake choo cha kwetu kilikuwa hakijajengwa na kilikuwa kimeporomoka,” the girl told NTV.

The girl’s guardian however denied the claims, stating that she would not have benefited by marrying off such a young girl.

She claimed that the rapist and his victim had an agreement and she played no role in bringing the two together.

The girl has been away from home pursuing her primary education at a rehabilitation centre. The fresh twist happened after she returned home from school.

She said her guardian told her that the toilet block had been reconstructed on her account.

NTV was unable to obtain the records of the rape case as names of the victim and rapist were not found in all files at the Voi Police station.
