Raila message of luck to Uhuru on election eve

Nasa Presidential candidate Raila Odinga has used his probable last press conference on the eve of polling day to do the most unlikely thing: Congratulate President Uhuru Kenyatta, his main opponent in the general election, and wish him good luck.

The polling stations for the 2017 general election open at 6am for what is billed as a closely fought, and re-match of the two candidates after the 2013 face-off.

At that time, President Kenyatta emerged the winner, even though Mr Odinga has always disputed the fairness of the win.

Mr Odinga paid glowing tribute to the President for what he described as a fair electioneering campaign that saw him (the president) traverse the nook and cranny of the country seeking votes.

FAIR CAMPAIGN

“I want to congratulate President Uhuru for a fair campaign,” he said after he briefed the nation on the details of his meeting with a delegation of European Union election observers at his Capitol Hill offices.

“I wish them well and may the stronger candidate win,” he went on.

Mr Odinga’s good luck message echoed the similar wish he had extended to his main rival when he solely appeared on stage during presidential debate that was snubbed by President Kenyatta.

At that time, Mr Odinga did not just wish both Mr Kenyatta and his deputy William Ruto success at the general election, but went on to call for what he described as a friendly match (fair election) without the rancor of violence.

“May the stronger candidate win…and that stronger candidate is Nasa,” he said.
