Outrage over pupils’ street demo after school’s demolition
Pictures of pupils from Kenyatta Academy blocking a section of Mbagathi Road with their desks has caused a public outrage on social media.
The photos show children as young as six years protesting the demolition of their school by placing their class furniture – from wooden desks to plastic colored chairs – on the road.
According to a teacher at the school who wishes to remain anonymous, the school has been operating inside a church, the Kenyatta PAG, but had been served with an eviction order by Kenya Railways.
She says a vetting exercise was done in 2010 and they were given two numbers by Kenya Railways awaiting the location to relocate to.
DEMOLITION
However, nothing has since been discussed, with the pastor of the church receiving a phone call on Friday notifying him of the impending demolition which was to be carried out the following day.
“They did not give any notice, they just called and went ahead to carry out the demolitions. The understanding was that they were supposed to give an alternative location where the school and church was supposed to be relocated,” said the teacher.
On Monday morning teachers, parents and the pupils had to salvage some of the property from the site.
Nairobi News tried to reach the Kenya Railways on the matter, but no one seemed to have any information about the demolitions at the school.
