Prof Mbithi takes helm at Uon


Prof Peter Mbithi is the new University of Nairobi Vice-Chancellor.

He replaces Prof George Magoha, who retires this month after serving in for two five-year terms.

The appointment is contained in a December 1, 2014, letter signed by Education Cabinet Secretary Jacob Kaimenyi.

“In exercise of the power conferred to me by the Universities Act, 2012, I hereby appoint you as the Vice-Chancellor, University of Nairobi for a period of five years with effect from January 6, 2015,” Prof Kaimenyi’s letter reads in part.

APPOINTMENT

Prof Mbithi will report to the university council chaired by Dr Idle Farah.

The letter of his appointment was copied to the Principal Secretaries in the Ministry of Education, the Chancellor, University of Nairobi, and the Chairman of the Council, University of Nairobi.

In October, the university council placed Prof Mbithi top of the candidates interviewed for the position.

In a report the council presented to Prof Kaimenyi, Prof Agnes Mwang’ombe was ranked second while Prof Isaac Mbeche and Prof Lucy Irungu were third and fourth respectively.
