President Uhuru to attend red cross 50th anniversary

They have been present in all disaster scenes across the country, always helping in psychological counselling, medical support and even in facilitation of fundraisers for victims by setting up paybill numbers.

The Kenya Red Cross Society will on Friday celebrate 50 years of service to the country at the Kenyatta International Conference Center.

President Uhuru Kenyatta will attend the event that will see the society’s emergency response services evaluated.

Statehouse confirmed the President’s attendance on Friday morning stating, “President @UKenyatta will today grace the Kenya Red Cross Society’s 50th anniversary and World Red Cross Day at KICC, Nairobi.”

The celebrations come at time when the country is healing from one of the worst terror attacks that left 147 people dead.

SUPPORT

Red Cross was at the forefront in offering trauma counselling to the relatives of the people who died in the attack.

For weeks the society staff camped outside Chiromo mortuary and even fed the relatives who were identifying their children among the badly decomposed bodies.

The Kenya Red Cross Society was established on December 21, 1965 by the Kenya Red Cross Society Act.

Its constitution is based on the Geneva Conventions of 1949 and their additional protocols of 1977 to which Kenya is a party.
