Thousands of the city’s residents drank 2013 away at the stroke of midnight on Tuesday while others flocked worship centres to pray for peace and prosperity.

Drunken youths roamed streets of the city centre amid reports that some took advantage of the revelry to stone and rob motorists on the Thika Superhighway.

Bars played loud music, while hawkers did brisk business selling wares to customers on the streets in downtown Nairobi.

A Groove Awards concert at Kasarani stadium appeared to be the destination of choice for many in the city, with thousands filling the stands as musicians, comedians and preachers entertained and led the crowd in prayers and celebrations.
