Politicians grabbing land in Nairobi still a headache, says Kidero
Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero has said land grabbing in the city is still a major challenge and he has already petitioned the National Land Commission (NLC) to revoke 1,247 titles of illegally acquired public parcels.
Speaking in Ruai, Dr Kidero said most of those grabbed parcels are churches and public schools in cases perpetuated by politicians.
“We are working with the NLC to get title deeds for schools as the cases are increasing as days go by. We just visited Friends School Dandora which had issues of land and we will resolve them,” he said.
He singled out Kasarani, Ruai and Embakasi as areas with large chunks of land which have attracted conmen.
LAND BUYING COMPANIES
Dr Kidero put on notice land buying companies for failing to issue title deeds to the owners saying it made them an easy target to land grabbers.
“Due to massive lands in this area of Kasarani and Embakasi, we had a lot of land buying companies based here like the Njiru/Githunguri on the lower side and Embakasi ranching and Kithyeeko and for the longest time they have frustrated the owners by not issuing the title deeds,” he said.
He added that he and President Uhuru Kenyatta will in the next three weeks issue 8,000 title deeds out of the 19,000 titles in Embakasi.
Dr Kidero also assured those whose leases have expired that they would not be subjected to eviction as the county would renew them to the original owners.
“For people whose land leases have ended, the county government as the primary custodian will revert to the person who owns it not to the new person claiming it,” said Dr Kidero.
