Policeman arrested after killing Kiambu politician over free beer
A police officer was on Sunday morning arrested after he allegedly shot dead a politician who reportedly refused to buy him beer at a popular nightclub in Limuru town, Kiambu County.
Police constable Edward Manjalu, attached at Directorate of Criminal Investigation headquarters, is said to have killed Mr William Mwangi at U-Turn bar over a bottle of beer.
The deceased, a building and construction engineer, unsuccessfully vied for Lari Kirenga Ward Representative seat
According the bar’s management, Mr Mwangi was with his friends when the policeman demanded to take a beer from their table at around 3 am.
PAY FOR IT
Mr Mwangi and his friends got angry and told the officer that he would only enjoy the drink if he was ready to pay for it leading to a heated argument.
According witnesses, a confrontation ensued and escalated to a fist fight between the Mr Mwangi’s team and the officer.
The officer was left with injuries on his face.
“The problem started when the gentleman demanded to take one of the bottles of beer we had bought but we asked him to pay for it. He asked us if we knew who he was but we told him we are in a free country guarded by law” said one of the deceased’s companions, but who wished not to be named.
RESTORE CALM
Mr George Karuga, the bar manager, said the club’s bouncers threw out the officer to restore calm.
However, when Mr Mwangi was leaving the premise, he met the officer waiting for him outside in the company of unknown people.
The deceased is reported to have entered his vehicle to leave, but the officer followed him shot him at a close range.
Limuru Directorate of Criminal Investigations officer Mr Mwenda Itheiba confirmed the arrest of the officer, who he said was assisting them with investigations.
The officer is being detained at Tigoni Police Station.
