Police detonate grenade found off Ngong road
Officers from the Bomb and Hazardous Unit on Thursday detonated a grenade found in Adams, off Ngong road.
The grenade was spotted by residents near the Nairobi Women’s Hospital’s branch in Adams.
The residents informed the police who later incorporated the services of Bomb experts.
Kilimani OCPD Peter Katam earlier described the device as oval, metallic and the size of a hockey ball. He initially termed it as ‘harmless’ but bomb experts later explained that it was a grenade.
“We are taking it to Ruiru to destroy it. This is a rusted grenade but it would have killed a lot of people,” an officer from the Bomb and Hazardous Unit who did not want to be named said.
“We should have destroyed it on sight but the effect would have been massive so we have to detonate it at a safe plac,” the officer said.
Police rushed to the scene when they were tipped of the device and threw a cordon of about 50 meters radius.
“The people who spotted the device informed us and we called bomb experts immediately. We then protected the area as we waited for them because we were not sure what the device was,” Mr Katam said.
When the bomb disposal unit led by Mr Eliud Lagat arrived at the scene, they took it for identification before detonating it.
“They then took it with them for testing so that we can determine exactly what it is,” Mr Katam.
He applauded members of the public for being on high alert.
“It is just a show that the public are on the look out and have matured to being careful by not ignoring playing with things they know nothing about. We urge them to report such case s to us for action,” Mr Katam said.
On Wednesday bomb experts detonated an explosive that had been planted at a bus station in Mlango Kubwa in Eastleigh.
