Police officer who shot and killed tout arrested

A police officer suspected to have shot dead a conductor in Roysambu has been arrested.

The Constable is at the Kasarani Police Station being questioned concerning the shooting that triggered protests among conductors on Thika Superhighway on Wednesday.

Mr Ombati said the deceased was shot dead on Tuesday night under unclear circumstances.

“The police officers on duty had reported the shooting around Roysambu but it was not clear who had been shot and why,” Mr Ombati said.

He added that the police came to learn of the shooting in the morning and that the deceased was a conductor for one of the matatus plying the Githurai 44 route.

“We only learnt about the incident in the morning during the riots that paralysed transport along the super highway,” he said yesterday.

Senior officers are trying to establish the circumstances under which the man was shot, especially since the offence has been linked to a security provider.

It is not clear whether there was an altercation before the shooting or whether the conductor was mistaken for a criminal in the 10.30pm incident.
