Police net bomb-making material in Eastleigh

Police are looking for the tenant of a house in Eastleigh in which bomb making materials were found on Sunday morning.

The materials were found in the house of Aden Ibrahim, 31, who is said to have escaped from the police during the swoop in the estate’s Seventh Street.

Police conducting the operation said they found chemicals and materials they suspect are used to make improvised explosive devices.

“The man we are looking for in connection to Sunday’s recovery purportedly lived in the estate illegally because he is supposed to be living in Dadaab Refugee Camp,” Nairobi County Police Commandant Benson Kibui said.

He said the police are yet to establish the intention of the man who is also suspected to have been training youth in the house. Learning materials were found in the house.

Security officers drawn from the General Service Unit, the Regular Police, the Administration Police and the Bomb and Hazardous Disposal Unit have been combing through Eastleigh since last week.

Over 1200 people have been arrested in the swoop that targets illegal immigrants, terrorists, criminal gangs and financiers of terrorism.

Those arrested during the operation were taken to the Kasarani Gymnasium where they are held for interrogation and investigation.

“Some of them will appear in court on Monday to answer to different charges,” Mr Kibui said.

On Wednesday night, police arrested a muslim cleric and his wife who were found with two grenades in their house in Eastleighe.

Sheikh Hussein Mahat Omar and his wife were taken in court and subsequently kept in custody after being denied bail.

His arrest came as police from the bomb disposal unit detonated two grenades in Mlango Kubwa and in Adams, off Ngong road.
