Police mount massive security operation on city roads ahead of New Year

Police have mounted a massive security operation on all major roads leading in and out of Nairobi as Kenyans prepare to usher in the New Year in style.

On Thursday, roadblocks were set up on Jogoo Road, Waiyaki Way, Thika Superhighway, Mombasa Road and Langata as police stepped up alertness.

The operation is focusing on both private and public service vehicles, which also includes checking on speed and drunk driving.

Nairobi County Commander Japheth Koome told Nairobi News: “We have adopted several methods to contain crime in the county. There are various strategies of managing crime. You do not stick to one type of operation.”

He went on: “We will conduct raids and ambushes, lay roadblocks besides enhancing patrols. There will also be aerial patrols by the Kenya Police Airwing to support the ground forces. We are about to cross over to the New Year and there is likelihood that criminals may take advantage of the situation. The city is calm and so far no major incident has been reported.”

The officers at the roadblocks will also focus on (occupants of) private vehicles.
