Police have launched a citywide manhunt for a gang that hijacked a town bound matatu along Jogoo Road and robbed ‘Double M’ passengers of their cash and valuables.

Police Spokesperson Charles Owino said the 30-seater bus was heading to the CBD when some of the passengers, who turned out to be thugs, drew out a gun and knives.

He said they robbed the passengers before abandoning them at a dark lane off Jogoo Road. They are believed to have fled into Kiambiu slums in Eastleigh.

The spokesperson said that no one was injured in the attack indicating that there has been a significant drop in such attacks in the past weeks due to alertness by the operators and police operations.

DRUG TRAFFICKING

Meanwhile, Owino disclosed that a parcel disguised as books but which contained 280 grams of heroin and destined for Canada was discovered by detectives at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.

He said that the parcel was intercepted by a team of Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) officers at JKIA.

“The officers, attached to the KRA Customs and Border Control division, on a routine screening mission at the DHL JKIA Warehouses, intercepted the parcel destined to Ontario, Canada.” Said Owino

He said that Police have since confirmed the parcel had 280 grams of heroin valued at Sh280, 000 and a search for its owner has already began

He added that two employees of DHL were interrogated over the incident because they handled the parcel.

“The parcel was a tightly concealed package, marked as two Biology book and an Encyclopedia and had been delivered for export to Canada, through the international courier company,” he said.
