Police hunt for Mugo wa Wairimu over rape of patients

Police were on Monday looking for the owner of a clinic in Nairobi after he was linked to a video that appears to show an unconscious female patient being raped by a “doctor”.

The video recorded using a hidden camera was broadcast by Citizen TV during prime time news on Sunday night.

According to the TV report, the video was recorded at Prestige Healthcare clinic in Githurai 44. The clinic is run by a man identified as Mugo wa Wairimu. It was not clear whether he is a qualified doctor or nurse.

The clinic targets mainly women seeking gynaecology services and the report claimed that some of the patients were raped after ingesting some sedative.

UNCONSCIOUS WOMAN

The video, which was later uploaded on YouTube, showed a naked woman on a doctor’s examination table and a man undressing before climbing onto the table and engaging in sex with the unconscious woman.

Police spokesman George Kinoti said Kasarani police commander Robinson Mboloi had been instructed to arrest the suspect.

The Director of Public Prosecutions, Mr Keriako Tobiko, also directed the police to complete investigations and give him the case file.

“It has come to our attention following a news report on Citizen TV that a ‘male gynaecologist’ has been sexually abusing his patients who visit the private clinic, Prestige Health Care situated at Githurai 44 and Zimmerman estates in Nairobi. We are aware that investigations have already commenced,” he said in a letter to the Director of Criminal Investigations, Mr Ndegwa Muhoro.

“You are hereby directed by the DPP to have the said investigations completed speedily and expeditiously and the file submitted for perusal and directions.”

The letter was signed by acting deputy DPP Nicholas Mutuku.

FACEBOOK RESPONSE

Mr Mugo wa Wairimu — an active user of social media — took to Facebook to respond to the allegations.

In one of his posts, he said: “I’m safe, very safe. Can’t answer the hundreds of calls coming in per minute. Just know I’m safe and strong. Time is the remedy of everything. In the meantime, I’m still well within the jurisdiction of our legal system. I’d not hesitate to present myself to the police if needed any minute, anytime.”

Mr Kinoti said police officers visited the clinic on Monday but did not find the owner.

Dr Were Onyino of Medical Practitioners and Dentists Board said that the clinic was not registered by the organisation.

“He is not a doctor, he is not a nurse, he is not a clinical officer or a lab person or anything associated with medics,” he said.

Dr Onyino said the clinic was also not licensed by the Nairobi County government.

The video also shows another patient, a 29-year-old woman, whose face was hidden so an not to be identified, narrating her ordeal at the clinic.

SEDATED AND RAPED

According to her, she was sedated and she believes she was raped at the clinic. Although she reported the matter to the police, she said she had no recollection of what actually happened.

Mr Mugo wa Wairimu, who has a large number of friends on Facebook later posted: “I still say no to prosecution by/through the media. I say a big no to blackmail. Period.”

Police camped at the clinic yesterday to keep off a crowd that threatened to set it on fire. The Law Society of Kenya demanded that the suspect be arrested and prosecuted for molesting patients.

LSK Chairman Erick Mutua said the society had identified a lawyer who will take up the case to ensure that the “amorous doctor” is punished.

“We have information that the same doctor has in the past been arrested but released under mysterious circumstances. The LSK Committee on health has instructions to start collecting evidence from the victims with a view to instituting legal proceedings against the doctor,” Mr Mutua told reporters at the LSK offices in Lavington, Nairobi after chairing LSK Council meeting.

FIDA-Kenya chairperson Ruyth Aura said: “FIDA-Kenya strongly condemns this form of violence and on behalf of women in Kenya will closely monitor the response by the relevant institutions to see to it that justice is done for the women of Kenya.”

Kenyans used Twitter to show their outrage and demand the arrest of the suspect.
