Police boss denies blocking death probe

Pangani police station boss denied insubordination in the death probe of a woman suspected to have been shot by one of his officers.

Chief Inspector Boniface Kavoo was also charged with disobeying a summons issued by the Independent Oversight Authority (Ipoa) on October 14 last year.

The authority was looking into the death of Peris Mwangi, who was killed when a bullet tore into her iron sheet shack in Mathare slum as she was breastfeeding her baby on July 15, last year.

Ipoa had allegedly asked Mr Kavoo to produce the bullet retrieved from her body which he is said to have refused to do.

The authority believes the Pangani station boss frustrated investigations to protect the officer.

Mr Kavoo’s lawyers failed to have the case deferred on grounds that proper investigations had not been done.

He was released on a Sh100,000 cash bail and the hearing set for May 14.
