Parents told not to rush children through school


Education Cabinet Secretary has asked parents to stop rushing children through school.

Prof Jacob Kaimenyi said there has been an increase in the number of underage children joining the education system. 

He made the remarks  at Mtihani House on Monday while releasing results of 2013 Kenya Certificate for Secondary Exams (KCSE). 

“The official age for children to join Form 1 is 14 while class 1 is 6 years of age, ” said Kaimenyi.

“We had about 1.33 percent increase of underage students sitting for KCSE exams last year, ” noted Kaimenyi.

 A total of 446, 696 candidates sat for the exam.

Kiambu county had the highest number of candidates at 5.43 per cent, followed by Nakuru at 5.07 per cent, Kakamega at 4.70 per cent and Nairobi at 4.63 percent.
