Two dead, several injured in Pangani accident

Two people died while 17 others sustained serious injuries following a grisly accident on Nairobi’s Thika Superhighway on Saturday morning.

Witnesses said the 35-seater bus belonging to the BD Travelers Sacco rammed into the steel barriers supporting the flyover at Pangani.

Fred Majiwa of St John Ambulance told Nairobi News that one person died on the spot while another was pronounced dead upon arrival at the Kenyatta National Hospital.

“There are reports that the rear tyres had burst causing the driver to lose control of the vehicle before it hit the barriers but we haven’t confirmed that,” said Mr Majiwa.

Eye witnesses say the vehicle was traveling at a high speed before the accident occurred.

The injured are admitted at KNH. The accident caused a huge traffic snarl up before the ill-fated bus was removed from the scene.

Following the accident, Mr Majiwa has urged drivers to drive slowly and safely during this festive season.

“They should not rush because they might not reach the intended destination. We are also encouraging passengers not to enter a vehicle that is already full. We should all aim to cross over to 2015,” advised Mr Majiwa.
