Over 4,000 students to graduate at University of Nairobi

Some 4,379 students at the University of Nairobi will graduate on Friday. Billionaire businessman Peter Munga, who is also the Equity Bank board chairman, will receive an honorary degree during the university’s 55th graduation ceremony.

Top leaders who have received honorary degrees from the institution include retired President Mwai Kibaki, former Prime Minister Raila Odinga and former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan.

Fifty seven students will graduate with doctorate degrees, diplomas (995), Bachelor’s degrees (2,761), postgraduate diplomas (20) and master’s degrees (545).

Vice-Chancellor Peter Mbithi said those graduating are from the Colleges of Agriculture and Veterinary, Architecture and Engineering, Biological and Physical Sciences, Education and External Studies.

STUDENT POPULATION

Prof Mbithi said Mr Munga was proposed for the award by the School of Economics for his entrepreneurship. The proposal was tabled to the Senate, which was convinced that Mr Munga was qualified to receive the award.

The event will be presided over by Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i.

“Students graduating from these four colleges have been trained to cause technological disruptions geared towards transforming Kenya into a middle income country by 2030,” said Prof Mbithi.

The university produces over 100 doctorate of philosophy degree annually, boost of 189, 000 graduates has 1,350 international linkages and offer 584 programmes.

University of Nairobi has a research budget of Sh4.5billion, with 5,525 administrative and technical staff and 2,052 academic staff with over 450 professors serving a population of 84,000 students.

Prof Mbithi said the award of honorary degree is the first one from industry noting that universities must be ready to work with the industry.
