One too many Tusker blackouts Sofapaka
Red hot Tusker skipper Jesse Were claimed his second hat trick of the season on Saturday evening as a rejuvenated Tusker ended their six-year winless streak against Sofapaka with an empathic 5-0 victory at the Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos.
It was a miserable afternoon for Batoto ba Mungu who saw their long standing record against the Brewers torn to shreds in cruel fashion.
And it was non other than their former coach, the Dutch trained Francis Kimanzi, now calling the shots at the brewers dug out, who masterminded the demolition thanks to his side’s fluid passing game.
Skipper Were opened his goals account from the spot in the 21st minute before completing his hattrick after the interval.
His treble of goals took his season’s tally to 16 on top of the goal scorers’ chart from 19 matches. He has now scored four more goals than closest challenger for the golden boot Michael Olunga of Gor Mahia.
Centre half Eugene Asike was also on target sweeping home the second goal on the stroke of half time to punish his former employers.
TERRIBLE OUTCOME
As a jaded Sofapaka was still reeling from the shock of falling behind in the match, Noah Wafula twisted the knife in their back, scoring his first goal in a Tusker shirt straight after the break from Joackins Atudo right flank delivery.
Tusker have now scored eleven goals in three matches, the best tally in the league in the last three rounds.
Sofapaka’s misery was made worse with two missed penalties with John Baraza and Ezekiel Odera the culprits.
This was their second defeat on the bounce having suffered a 2-0 loss to Kenya Commercial Bank in their last outing.
“This is terrible. I can’t remember the last time I lost by such a huge margin. It was due to lack of tactical discipline,” Sofapaka coach Sam Timbe said after the match.
Tusker coach Kimanzi said the victory was a reward for his boys,who are now showing a hunger for success.
“Right now, if you watch them play, you can see that everyone wants to score and its good for the team,” Kimanzi said.
MISSED PENALTY
At Nakuru’s Afraha Stadium, Ulinzi Stars welcomed back head coach Robert Matano with a 2-0 win over Ushuru. Matano has been away from the touchline on sick leave.
The soldiers, who are lying in second position in the standings on 37 points, scored their match opener in the 20th minute through Eric Apul who soared high to head home Kevin Amwayi’s corner.
On resumption, Ken Kenyatta’s Ushuru should have leveled the scores when hey were awarded a penalty kick but Charles Okwemba missed from the spot.
They were made to pay for it in the 65th minute when Ulinzi’s towering striker Oscar Wamalwa unleashed a fierce left footer that caught Ushuru custodian Ali Kimera flat footed.
At the Moi Stadiumi in Kisumu, a solitary goal by Joshua Oyoo in the first half was enough to hand Chemelil Sugar a deserved victory over KCB, while in Muhoroni, a goal by Wycliffe Ochomo secured a 1-0 win for Muhoroni Youth over visiting Bandari.
