Okumbi fumes at journalist for questioning his team selection – VIDEO

June 14th, 2017 1 min read

A furious Stanley Okumbi on arrival from Sierra Leone blasted a journalist who had questioned his fielding during Harambee Stars 2-1 loss in the West African country.

That defeat suffered at the hands of the hosts in Freetown leaves Kenya joint bottom in Group F of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers alongside Ethiopia who were thrashed 5-0 by Ghana in Kumasi on Sunday.

The outcome has severely impacted on Kenya’s chances of playing at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon.

Stars, now have no choice but to win all her remaining five games in the pool, starting with that tasty fixture at home to Ghana in June 2018, to stand a chance of securing qualification to the biennial tournament.

Upon the team’s return from Sierra Leone on Tuesday morning, Okumbi exhibited considerable discomfort when a journalist questioned why he opted to field Kariobangi Sharks rookie striker Masoud Juma from the start instead of, say, the more experienced Stephen Waruru of Ulinzi Stars.

To which Okumbi responded: “When you ask me why I didn’t field Waruru, you know you also have to give me a reason (as to why you are asking the question). Why did you want me to start him?”

Journalist: “He has scored more goals than Masoud in the league (this season)”.

Okumbi: “Does it mean that if you score more goals in the league you will score more in the national team?”

In his calmer submission later on, Stars captain Victor Wanyama conceded the team was unlucky to lose in that fixture.
