Officer kills wife, hangs self in Kibera

A policeman stabbed his wife to death then took a rope and hanged himself on Sunday morning in Kibera, Nairobi.

The woman is a radio technician with the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC) in Nairobi.

The Kenya Police spokesperson Zipporah Mboroki said that Ms Alice Cherop Samoei, 32, was attacked by her husband who is a police officer in Voi.

After killing her, Constable William Chepsos hanged himself in the house.

“Ms Samoei was found stabbed to death while her husband, a police constable, was found hanging in the house after the suspected murder and suicide,” said Ms Mboroki.

TRANSFERRED

Police said Mr Chepsos was working in Nairobi but was transferred to Voi recently. He, however, did not move with the family.

He travelled from Voi on Saturday night but did not find the wife at home. She arrived home yesterday morning, prompting a row, said police.

“We will conduct a postmortem exam on Tuesday but we do not suspect there is any third party involvement,” she said.

The couple’s children are said to have escaped to a neighbour’s house as soon as trouble started.

Three months ago, a middle-aged man stabbed his wife to death and later committed suicide after a domestic quarrel in Nakuru County.

INCREASE OF CASES

Police records indicate that there has been an increase in such cases involving policemen in the past two years.

In March last year, Senior Sergeant Evans Onyango from Westlands AP Camp shot himself dead after he attempted to kill his wife.

The officer shot his wife, Constable Janet Atieno, four times before turning the firearm on himself. He died instantly.

However the wife survived with serious injuries.
