Officer who killed wife, daughter charged in court

An anti-Stock Theft Unit police officer accused of shooting and killing his wife and child in Subukia was charged on Thursday with murder in the High Court in Nakuru.

Police said the suspect was arrested on Wednesday evening at his rural home in Nandi County where he had fled after allegedly committing the murder in Nakuru County earlier in the morning.

Cosmas Kipchumba Biwott, who appeared before Justice Maureen Odero, was charged with killing Jane Njoki, 26, and his five-year-old daughter at Suswa ASTU camp in Subukia, Nakuru County, on February 28 at 3 am.

The suspect, however, could not take a plea after the State requested to have it deferred to allow investigations to be concluded.

According to the prosecution, police needed more time to complete their investigations.

Manhunt launched for police officer who killed lover and 2-year-old daughter

The court heard that the officer turned his gun on his wife and daughter following a domestic squabble and then fled.

Neighbours and relatives described the suspect as a man who was involved in frequent fights with his wife.

Ms Wambui Nderitu, Njoki’s mother, said the incident occurred days after her daughter returned to her matrimonial home after separating from the suspect earlier.

Justice Odero directed that the suspect be detained for two weeks at the Nakuru Central Police Station as police conclude investigations.

She further directed that the suspect be taken for psychiatric examination before he pleads to the charges.

Police say the officer, who has been in the service for two years, pumped 20 bullets into the victims. The hearing continues on March 15.
