ODM official to sue government for arrest in Malindi

ODM Communications Director Phillip Etale intends to sue the government for “infringing his rights” during his arrest on Monday in Malindi.

Mr Etale was arrested at his hotel room in Malindi early morning and was subsequently held for about 12 hours at a police station.

He was charged in court with electoral related offences and released on bail.

At the time of his arrest, Mr Etale was coordinating ODM operations in the Malindi by-election.

Speaking to Nairobi News after his release Mr Etale said: “I was picked up by ten police officers some in uniform. They tricked me into getting arrested and locked up.

“They also ordered me not to use my phone and other communication gadgets. The cells were stuffy and food wasn’t good. My rights were infringed on and I will be seeking justice through the courts.”

Mr Etale, a former journalist, maintains his innocence on all the charges preferred against him.
