ODM aspirants in Nairobi to battle it out on April 23

Nairobi aspirants in the Orange Democratic Patry (ODM) will battle it out in the primaries on April 23.

The party released its revised party primaries timetable on Thursday, stating that it moved the dates in order to give its legislators time to participate in the budget process during the first week of April.

ODM will hold its first primariesin Bungoma, Busia and Machakos counties on April 7.

Nairobi will be among the last counties alongside Makueni and Garissa.

The opposition, through the newly formed National Super Alliance (Nasa), formed a technical committee to come up with an agreeable formula for conducting the party primaries.

This was after leaders disagreed on whether to hold joint or separate primaries for the various positions in different counties.

ODM chairman John Mbadi and Ford-Kenya’s Chris Wamalwa preferred joint nominations, while Wiper secretary-general Hassan Omar maintained that affiliate parties should field candidates for other seats apart from the presidency.

The underlying fear, however, is that by fielding more than one candidate, the Nasa politicians would split votes and give advantage to their Jubilee opponents.
