Nzoia coach Mwalala survives road accident unhurt

Nzoia Sugar coach Bernard Mwalala is expected to take charge of his team’s SportPesa Premier League tie against Sony Sugar in Mumias on Wednesday afternoon.

This is despite the youthful coach getting involved in a road accident on Tuesday night that left his Subaru Legacy salon car badly damaged.

Mwalala, who in his heyday was a lethal striker for both the national football team and Tanzania giant club Yanga SC, was unavailable for comment by press time, but a close friend and former colleague Boniface Ambani confirmed via Facebook that the coach is fine.

SUCCESSFUL STINT

“His car rammed into a tractor that was ferrying sugarcane along the Webuye-Bungoma road at night. The tractor neither had reflectors nor lights. But he escaped unscathed,” Ambani said.

Mwalala, who also enjoyed a successful playing stint in Malaysia, is one of the highly rated coaches in the SportPesa Premier League this season.

His team’s 5-2 demolition of defending champions Tusker on the opening day of the season is considered a significant highlight with the sugar millers currently placed eighth on the 18-team table standings after six rounds of matches.
