No hiring out of schools’ facilities to public, Kidero

Governor Evans Kidero has banned the hiring out of public schools’ facilities to the public.

Head teachers routinely hire out school buses, halls and  playing grounds to the public as a way of shoring up revenues for their respective schools.

Governor Kidero now want members of the public to start using social halls instead of schools.

“In Parklands there was a girls school where the principal got into a venture with a shopping mall and cars were being parked at a fee notwithstanding the threat to the girl child with strangers walking around in the school,” he said.

Public schools will also not pay land rates once the new rating legislation that is in the County Assembly comes into effect.

During a meeting with the Governor on Monday at City Hall, secondary school heads that their land rates obligations stretched back to independence and if they were forced to pay them, they would cripple the schools financially.

The Governor said such outstanding rates will be waived.

The county also plans to spend Sh2 billion in the next financial year on public schools’ infrastructure.

Dr Kidero added that he has already secured Sh170 million from private sector for building classes in various city schools.
