Nkaissery upholds Lamu curfew
Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph Nkaissery has upheld the overnight curfew in Lamu County. Nkaissery arrived at this decision hours after assuming office on Christmas eve, and moments after attending a three hour long meeting with senior security officials in Nairobi on Tuesday afternoon.
“Every person presiding within Lamu County mainland is directed to remain indoors during the period the curfew orders is in force except under accordance with terms and conditions of a written permit granted by the Lamu County Police Commander” Nkaisserry asserted in a two paragraph statement sent to newsrooms on Christmas day.
The newly appointed Cabinet Secretary has also – in paid up radio advertisements – requested all Kenyans to report any suspicious looking persons or behaviour to the nearest Police Station “so as to help the Government protect the lives and property of Kenyans”.
The curfew imposed on the Coastal town has been in force for the past five months, since a wave of attacks by suspected Al Shabaab militia resulted in the death of tens of residents in the area.
Residents of the area have in the past complained about this decision by the Government to restrict movement at night, insisting that this move limits their rights and has affected business operations.
