Njenga Karume’s grandson arrested on suspicion of killing his girlfriend

Police in Kiambu have arrested a grandson of the late Minister Njenga Karume on suspicion that he pushed his girlfriend to death from the fourth floor of an apartment block on Thursday night.

Kiambu County commander, James Mugera, confirmed that police are interrogating Kenneth Wathugi Karume, son of Joseph Karume Njenga who is the first son of the late politician.

Mr Karume once served as the Defence Minister during president Mwai Kibaki’s administration.

The victim, Mumbi Kalungia, who sustained several injuries on her limbs, head and back, died on the spot.

COMMOTION

According to Mr Mugera, neigbours said that they heard commotion in the house where the two were, before hearing a loud thud, prompting them to check what had happened.

“They discovered the lady’s body on the ground. The suspect is being held at the Kiambu Police Station and helping us with information as to what happened during the 11pm incident,” Mr Mugera said.

The County boss said a few neigbours at the Garcia Apartment had been questioned.

Sources say that after the incident, Mr Wathugi tried to flee from the apartment but was apprehended by neigbours who called the police. Cases of young couples killing one another have been on the rise in the recent past.
