By KNA July 27th, 2017 1 min read

The Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) will suspend its operations on the August 8 to allow staff and service providers to vote in the general elections.

Kenya Railways Managing Director Atanas Maina announced that there will be service interruption of the commuter services and passengers will have to seek alternative means from Nairobi to Mombasa and back on the voting day.

“We shall have the first schedule interruption of service on August 8, 2017 due to the national elections and it is imperative that staff and service providers of the Madaraka Express exercise their democratic voting right,” said Maina.

He further added that operations on the SGR line and Madaraka Express service between Mombasa and Nairobi are set to improve the overall efficiency of human and freight transport within the Northern Corridor.

The MD said that the Madaraka Express will ferry up to one million passengers per annum which will rise to 1.5 million passengers per year by the third year of operations.
