YELLOW BOXES: Why city motorists can now breathe easy

City motorists have two months to familiarize with the new yellow boxes on intersections before City hall starts slapping fines on offenders.

Transport county executive Mohammed Abdullahi said City Hall will first sensitize the motorists on how the yellow boxes work.

“If we had just informed the motorist without showing them what we meant they will never have understood the concept,”said Mr Mohammed.

INSTANT FINES

City Hall is also coming up with a regulation to allow instant fines against motorists found causing obstruction on the yellow boxes to avoid inconveniences.

“After two months nobody will say they do not know how the yellow boxes works,”said Mr Mohammed.

He said that the yellow boxes concept had been used in the past in Nairobi and has also been successful in other parts of the world.

He however said they were introduce to allow the free flow of traffic in the city centre.

Mr Mohammed added that more changes will be introduced to end traffic jams in the city centre.

NEW FINES

Last week City hall announced that motorist will be fined up to Sh 100,000 if they obstruct the newly introduced yellow boxes.

City Hall also introduced a fine of Sh 100,000 for the offence of driving without due care and attention and Sh 50,000 for obstruction.

“We have tried the Kidero Drums and we saw its weakness and now we will continue enrolling different ways in a bid to find the most suitable one for our city,”he said.
