Woman who hosted drug party is wife of military general
A South Sudanese woman accused of selling alcohol to minors at a house party in Phenom Estate, in Lang’ata, was released from remand under unclear circumstances.
The officer in charge of Lang’ata police station Derrick Nyagah told a court on Monday that he was ordered to release Mary Nanyuk after it emerged that she is the wife of a senior military general in South Sudan.
The order came from a senior judicial officer at Kibera Law Court, he told the court.
The OCS said he did no court order was presented to him before the release of the woman.
The police boss said that he called the senior judicial officer after officials from the South Sudanese embassy intervened to have the woman released from custody.
Ms Nanyuk was remanded at the Lang’ata police station after denying three counts of selling alcohol to minors and being in the country illegally.
Police had initially suspected the party to be part of the banned Project X party.
Prosecution had last Friday claimed that Ms Nanyuk was hosting the party to celebrate her son’s performance in the Kenya Certificate Secondary Education (KCSE) exams.
About 106 youths, some as young as 16 years, were arrested in the house party held in the estate located near Carnivore Restaurant in Lang’ata.
