Teachers resort to empty sufurias in push for pay

Officials of a teachers’ union on Tuesday engaged a higher gear in their push for a pay rise, posing with empty sufurias at a press conference and insisting they will stay away from classrooms until they are paid.

The Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (Kuppet) held susfurias written on ‘Njaa’, Swahili for hunger.

The officials told their members to proceed with a national strike when schools reopen.

They said they do not need to issue any strike notice because this is a continuation of the work boycott they started in January

Treasury Cabinet Secretary Henry Rotich had earlier insisted that the government has no money to pay teachers.

Mr Rotich asked teachers to return to work until the Salary and Remuneration Commission (SRC) finishes job evaluation for teachers.
