We’ll not name ‘corrupt’ Jubilee officials slapped with visa bans: US

United States ambassador Robert Godec has said  his government can not respond to speculations about senior government officials banned from setting foot on US soil over corruption.

Ambassador Godec on Thursday said United States will continue to use visa denial as a tool to “help Kenya end this scourge” of corruption.

In a subsequent post on Twitter, the US embassy dismissed a list of 45 names that has been circulating on social media of those allegedly banned from the United States.

“T/ circulated “US Visa Ban” lists were NOT produced by t/ US Embassy & are based on speculation by individuals NOT associated w/ the US Govt,” said the tweet.

The names include a top Jubilee government leader along with those of former cabinet secretaries.

High ranking members of parliament whose conduct has been questionable are also part of the list as well as top directors of state corporations.

Others in the list include a top former judiciary official, sitting governors who are part of the council of governors and former mayors.

The US had last month slapped visa bans on a number of Kenyan individuals who have been implicated in corrupt deals. Ambassador Godec explained that the move is part of efforts to support President Uhuru Kenyatta’s effort in fighting corruption.
