Wario now under pressure to rescind Nock disbandment

Parliament’s Labour and Social Welfare Committee has called on Sports Cabinet Secretary Hassan Wario to rescind his decision to disband the National Olympic Committee of Kenya (Nock).

Speaking on Thursday, Webuye MP Dan Wanyama, who is a member of the committee, argued that Wario’s decision is set to place Kenya in the bad books of the International Olympic Committee.

“The committee has asked the Government to target individuals who bungled team Kenya’s preparation and activities in Rio,” Wanyama said.

Wario disbanded Nock last month in the wake of public outcry over mismanagement of funds and abuse of office by its top officials during the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

ARRAIGNED IN COURT

The decision has since been contested in court by Nock through chairman Kipchoge Keino and treasurer Fridah Shiroya.

In the meantime, Shiroya alongside Nock’s secretary general Francis K. Paul and another official Stephen arap Soi have been arraigned in court to face several charges related to abuse of office.

Wanyama a former Kenya international volleyball player also called for a thorough investigation into the conduct of senior officials in the Ministry of Sports, including Wario and Principal Secretary Ambassador Richard Ekai.
