Visitors being stripped of plastic bags at JKIA as ban bites

By EVELYNE MUSAMBI September 25th, 2017 1 min read

The ban on plastic bags is now being felt by visitors landing in the country’s biggest airport.

The Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) has placed bins at entry points at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport for visitors to drop off their plastic bags.

A United Nations Environment Programme (Unep) staffer over the weekend noted the ban being effected on arrival in Kenya and took a photo of two women dropping off their plastic paper bags.

The drop-off bin looks like what countries like Rwanda have at their entry points to ensure no plastic bags enter the country.

The photo of the happy women getting rid of their plastic bags has been shared over 500 times locally with users lauding the environment ministry.

The ban on plastic bags took effect on August 28 and has seen supermarkets adopt eco-friendly bags that they are selling to shoppers.

The National Environment Management Authority (Nema) has set up numerous plastic bags collection centres across the country.
