Varsity students clobbered in 1824 whiskey bar yet to report to police

Police in Langata have launched investigations into claims that university students were on Friday night assaulted at a popular club.

According to the University of Nairobi student leader Paul Ongili, alias Babu Owino, two students were hospitalised after being beaten by the club’s security-men.

Mr Ongili on Monday wrote a letter notifying the Inspector General of Police of a planned Tuesday demonstration within and around the said club.

In his letter that was widely circulated on social media, Mr Ongili accused the club security-men of harassing university students on previous occasions.

“Currently, a student is fighting for his dear life at the St Mary’s Hospital in Langata. The student was attacked, harassed and beaten by bouncers of Club 1824 after a minor altercation that could have been peacefully handled,” read the letter in part.

INVESTIGATIONS STARTED

Mr Ongili copied the letter to the Officer Commanding Langata Police Station as well as the university’s administration.

When Nairobi News contacted the Officer Commanding Langata Police Division Elijah Mwangi, he said that investigations on the incident had started.

“We are however appealing to students who are complaining to have been harassed to record statements with the police because until now no one has done that,” said Mr Mwangi.

The OCPD added that a formal notification of the planned demonstration had not been made, but stated that police will be on high alert on Tuesday.

“It can be an unlawful demonstration if any as the students will have inconvenienced other Kenyans,” said Mr Mwangi.

Calls by Nairobi News to the club’s management to ascertain the authenticity of a letter leaked on social media on the matter went unanswered.
