Was he a thug or a student at Leeds University? This is the question that remains unanswered following the shooting of Carilton David Maina, 23, in Line Saba, Kibera.

According to area residents, who are now seeking justice for the victim, Carilton was a student at Leeds University

The police however claim he was among a group of thugs who were terrorizing area residents on Sunday morning.

MUGGERS

“He came home for the December holidays and would have gone back (to England) in January if not for his life being ended by the split second speed of the bullets and the ravenous interests of the police. He had just come from watching a football match in the nearest movie shop, being a fanatic football fan and as a matter of fact a potential goalkeeper,” said Collins Onyango, on Facebook.

However, Kilimani police boss Michael Muchiri has denounced these claims, saying the victim was in a group of muggers who were terrorising the locals.

“The police received a call from the members of the public who said that they were being mugged by a group of youths. It is then that the police acted and shot one on the spot,” he said.

SCENE OF CRIME

Mr Muchiri said that the police recovered a homemade gun and a knife at the scene of crime.

Carilton’s love for football can be traced back to high school where he was an active member of the football team at Maseno School.

In 2013, he was the winner of the East African Community Essay writing competition.

He sat his Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education in the same year and scored a mean grade of A plain.
