Uhuru launches new coins: Here are things to know
President Uhuru Kenyatta on Tuesday launched the new generation coins at the Central Bank of Kenya.
The coins bear no symbols or portraits of persons as outlined in the 2010 constitution. They have been gazetted and will begin to circulate Tuesday.
The coins will be available in denominations of Sh1, Sh5, Sh10 and Sh20. They will have the following features.
Sh1 coin = Image of a Giraffe
Sh5 coin = Image of a Rhino
Sh10 coin = Image of a Lion
Sh20 coin = Image of an Elephant. #NewCurrencyKE
“I am extremely pleased that today we can achieve yet another milestone, launching the family of new generation coins. They honour the wishes of the people of Kenya in regard to their national currency as expressed in the constitution,” said President Kenyatta at the launch.
The new generation coins contains features that make it accessible to visually impaired people.
