Ugly standoff as activist Maina Kiai is detained at JKIA

Human rights activist Maina Kiai was on Sunday morning briefly detained at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) “on orders from the Director of Immigration”.

Ms Lucy Hannan, Mr Kiai’s colleague at InformAction, says the vocal rights activist was heading to Prague when the incident happened.

“He called a number of diplomats and he has also spoken to other people about it. It is really worrying especially after the attempted crackdown on civil societies. And why now yet the presidential petition which the government was attempting to prevent has been filled,” said Ms Hannan.

Mr Kiai was eventually allowed to board his flight but not before standoff.

His detention comes just days after IEBC commissioner Roselyn Akombe was detained from boarding her flight to the the US until the US Embassy in Nairobi intervened.
