Transition: Ugandan Minister dies on flight


Uganda is mourning following the death of a senior Cabinet Minister under tragic circumstances on Saturday morning.

According to reports in the Daily Monitor, Gen Aronda Nyakarima, Uganda’s Internal Affairs Minister died airborne while returning home from official duty in South Korea.

Unconfirmed reports by Ugandan media suggest that the late minister suffered cardiac arrest on transit to Dubai.

“General Aronda died aboard a flight from South Korea,” the newspaper quoted Internal Affairs Ministry spokesperson Pamela Ankunda announced.

Details of exactly what happened, how far the plane had to travel with Aronda’s body, or the exact location of his remains have not been released by the Ugandan Government.

“The government has set up a task force, led by Defence Minister Hon Crispus Kiyonga, to coordinate all matters relating to this tragedy. A team of doctors/pathologists is also being sent to Dubai, United Arab Emirates to assist with the postmortem and the repatriation of the body,” the country’s Prime Minister Ruhakana Rugunda said in a statement.

The deceased, who has passed on at the age of 64, has also held several influential positions in Uganda’s intelligence circles.
