Limping Bobi Wine re-arrested after leaving military court

Kyadondo East MP Robert Kyagulanyi-cum-singer Bobi Wine has been arrested by police shortly after leaving a military court.

Earlier, Uganda government withdrew charges the MP, which he was facing in a military court.

The prosecution inside the military court martial said they wanted the MP transferred to police for further investigations and possibly face more charges in a civilian court.

The withdrawal was announced by a military court sitting in Gulu, some 330km from the capital Kampala.

Bobi Wine, who was in attendance during this hearing, has been in detention at several military camps in the country for the past week.

He was accused of being in possession of illegal guns.

His arrest has led to unrest in the country and an international call for his unconditional release,

The MP’s lawyers welcomed the withdrawal of charge but objected to him being transferred to the police.

Inside the court, Bobi Wine was seen celebrating his freedom.

The general, who made the ruling, said it would be a double jeopardy to have the MP face charges in two courts. Bobi Wine was taken to a magistrate court.

At the military court, the MP who was limping and using crutches was aided by several people to walk. He was visibly in pain.

Once outside the court, one of his lawyers said he had been told to inform the MP by the police that he was under arrest.

The lawyers added that there was need to comply owing to Bobi Wine’s health.

The MP’s wife Barbie shepherded him inside a waiting private car.
