Two girls killed by bomb in village filled with explosives left by KDF soldiers


Two girls were killed on Monday by a bomb suspected to have been left behind by Kenyan soldiers in Diff area, Wajir County.

The two, identified as  13 year-old Naima Habas and 19 year-old Emilio Habas, were herding their father’s goats they came across a metallic object.

Their father, Habas Haji Noor, told the police that his daughters innocently carried the object home without knowing is was an explosive.

HIT EXPLOSIVE

At home, the curious girls tried to pry the object open by hitting hit it with a blunt object.

The bomb detonated and killed them on the spot.

A police report released hours later revealed that one of the bodies had be shattered into pieces. The other body had visable shrapnel wounds.

The police took the bodies to Diff health center awaiting transfer to the Wajir referral hospital for postmortem.

Police have started investigations into the incident with bomb experts expected to visit the scene of the explosion.

The Kenya Defense Forces is currently mopping up villages in Samburu County that have reported cases of abandoned explosives in the past one year.

The mission, called ‘Operation Ondoa Nanasi‘, includes creating awareness among villagers on what to do  should they encounter the explosive devices.
