Train commuters in Nairobi stranded after ‘hitch’

Thousands of morning commuters in Nairobi were left stranded after Kenya Railways withdrew trains on Monday due to what it termed as a ‘technical hitch’.

“Due to a technical hitch, we regret to inform you that we will not be running the commuter trains this (Monday) morning,” the company announced Monday morning.

“This affects commuters along Syokimau, Imara Daima, Makadara, Kikuyu, Kibera, Embakasi and Ruiru routes.”

Charity Kamiro of Kenya Railways said the delay, which had affected both Kenya and Uganda, has since been rectified.

“We apologize to our customers for the inconvenience caused by this situation. All trains have now resumed their normal schedules and we have put measures to ensure this does not recur,” she said.

Monday’s suspension of the commuter train services comes fives days after a train driver jumped off an engine whose pressure breaks had failed.

According to police, the train engine’s braking system had failed at the Makadara station. The  train was heading to Githurai.
