By KNA April 4th, 2016 1 min read

A man collapsed and died after taking part in a six-kilometer race during a police recruitment exercise in Kwale County on Monday.

The 23-year-old collapsed immediately after completing the race at Baraza Park and was pronounced dead on arrival at Kwale County Hospital.

The County Health Executive Athuman Chiguzo said the young man, identified as Mwarika Rika from Golini vilage, Matuga Sub-county, died of high blood pressure.

SUDDEN DEATH

The deceased had finished at position 14 in the race in which 48 potential recruits participated, according to Police superintendent Moses Owiti who was in charge of the recruitment.

Owiti said the deceased had tried hard in the race, and it was unfortunate that his efforts to join the service ended tragically.

The father to the deceased, Rika Mwalimu, a driver at Tiwi Secondary School, expressed shock at the sudden death of his son saying he got the information while at a local bank.

All police applicants are subjected to rigorous physical exercises including running to assess their fitness before joining the police service.
