Traffic policeman bites finger of EACC detective during swoop – PHOTOS

An anti-corruption detective had his finger bitten during the dramatic arrest of police traffic officers suspected of taking bribes at Classic area on the Nyeri-Othaya road.

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) detective was part of a team involved in a sting operation on Friday morning which resulted in the arrest of two traffic officers seen collecting bribes from motorists on the road.

The injured detective was later rushed to a nearby health facility for treatment.

According to the Central region EACC deputy director Jackson Mue, the traffic officers were arrested following numerous complaints of soliciting of bribes from motorists.

“They are in our custody and we are processing them,” said Mr Mue. “We will give media more details including what was recovered later,” he added.

The 7am incident attracted members of the public who said the officers had been collecting bribes from motorists for a long time.

“Public Service Vehicles and boda bodas are their main target. Every matatu plying this route must stop at that point and the driver must part with at least Sh50. Those who resist get arrested and are charged in court,” a matatu driver said.

A confidential source at the commission’s office said processing of the officers took long since they were hostile and were not cooperating with the detectives, adding that one was violent and had attempted to undress.

“They are not cooperating and are resisting to record statements. From morning to noon very little development has happened. The process is very slowly. We are also getting their details and documents from Nyeri Central traffic base,” said the source.
