Three StephJoy students to be charged with murder

Three students who were arrested following a school fire that killed three of their colleagues on Sunday night will be charged with murder.

Nine other students who were arrested alongside the three over the fire at Stephjoy Boys High School in Limuru were released by police Thursday morning after investigations vindicated them.

Limuru Senior Principal Magistrate Geoffrey Oduor made the ruling Thursday after the prosecution said the court did not have the jurisdiction to listen to serious crimes such as murder.

Not taken plea

The three students had appeared before the court but did not plead to the charges.

Two students, Ian Kamau and Edwin Mugo, died during the Sunday night fire that gutted two dormitories.

A third student, Zachary Njoroge, succumbed to burn injuries on Monday night while being treated at Kenyatta National Hospital.

On Thursday, the magistrate ordered that the three students be presented at the High Court by Friday.

The students were remanded at Tigoni Police Station.
